Counting sheep that count you back
Somewhere past the fortieth sheep the counting reverses. You stop being the one keeping track. The flock holds still, all those black glass eyes doing arithmetic, and the number they arrive at is you — one of you, exactly, standing in the grass render with nowhere to be.
I started leaving a sheep unfinished in every scene after that. An open slot. Room for whoever's counting.
